In "Saturn's Daughters," Patricia Reis explores how the relationship between father and daughter influences a woman's creative life. Drawing on the myth of Saturn – the archetypal devouring and melancholic father – she compares the stories of Saturn's mythological daughters – the goddesses Hestia, Demeter, Hera, and Aphrodite – with four modern female writers: Emily Dickinson, H.D. (Hilda Doolittle), Sylvia Plath, and Anaïs Nin. Using myths, dreams, and the life stories of contemporary women, Reis creates a map, charting the path women must take if they decide to leave the confines of the fathers' realm and patriarchal culture to unleash their creative potential in a free and authentic manner. The journey begins from the Father's Womb through the First Gates of Awakening. Reis marks the trails leading to the Wild Territory – a place not governed by paternal laws. The knowledge and wisdom gained there open new possibilities for women, and upon returning, they can contribute to society through creativity, inspiring other women to awaken. Thus, Reis has developed a model for the development of women's creative autonomy, which involves solving four tasks: escaping the authority of the personal father, overcoming societal expectations, finding independence and support among other women, and finally, developing self-confidence and a unique voice. Patricia Reis holds a Bachelor's degree in English Literature from the University of Wisconsin, a Master's degree in Arts and Design from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a degree in Depth Psychology from the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara. Her research focuses on how creativity, depth psychology, and the natural world influence a woman's spiritual life. She currently lives in Portland, Maine, where she is actively involved with the Writers' and Publishers' Alliance and maintains a private psychotherapy practice for women. Reis is the author of six books and numerous essays. She received a gold medal from Independent Press Publishers for her autobiographical work "Motherlines: Love, Longing, and Liberation."
