In Daughters of Saturn, Patricia Rice explores how father-daughter relationships influence a woman's creative life. Drawing on the myth of Saturn—the archetypal devouring and melancholic father—she juxtaposes the stories of the mythological daughters of Saturn—the goddesses Hestia, Demeter, Hera, and Aphrodite—with four contemporary women writers: Emily Dickinson, Hilda Doolittle, Sylvia Plath, and Anaïs Nin. Drawing on myths, dreams, and stories from the lives of contemporary women, Rice creates a map, charting the journey women must take if they dare to leave the confines of their fathers and patriarchal culture to unleash their creative potential in a free and authentic manner. The journey begins from the Womb of the Father through the First Gate of Awakening. Rice charts the paths leading to the Wild Territory, a place that defies paternal laws. The knowledge and wisdom gained there open new possibilities for women, and upon returning, they can contribute to society through creativity, inspiring other women to awaken. Thus, Reyes developed a model for developing women's creative autonomy that involves solving four tasks: breaking free from the authority of a personal father, overcoming societal expectations, gaining independence and support among other women, and, finally, developing self-confidence and a unique voice. Patricia Rice received a BA in English Literature from the University of Wisconsin, an MFA in Art and Design from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a degree in depth psychology from the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara. Her research focuses on how creativity, depth psychology, and the natural world influence women's spirituality. She currently lives in Portland, Maine, where she is active in the Writers and Publishers Union and maintains a private psychotherapy practice for women. Rice is the author of six books and numerous essays. For her autobiographical work, "Mother Lines: Love, Longing, and Liberation," she received a gold medal from Independent Press Publishers.
