A Man in the Making: Challenges and Prospects

The book comprises several lecture courses delivered by Jungian analyst Murray Stein at the C. G. Jung Institute of Chicago in the 1980s and 1990s. The lectures are dedicated to the process of male individuation, i.e., the physiological and spiritual growth of a man. According to Stein, individuation is a complex intertwining of physical, psychological, and cultural factors. Each of these is given due attention in the lectures, with the primary focus on psychological aspects. By identifying five "epochs," or stages of male development, the author elaborates on each, and also discusses male friendship and archetypal gestures of fatherhood. The book aims to help men of all ages navigate life, understand the psychological significance and importance of each stage of individuation, and find meaning and direction for further personal development. "...it is now more important than ever to have an understanding of possible ways for a man to develop. Very often, the process stops at the stage of developing the heroic ego, and everything else is seen as inadequate or superfluous. I tried to follow Jung's idea that individuation continues throughout a person's life and has a purpose far beyond what the US Marine Corps aims to achieve." This is the first time the full book has been published in Russian.
