Dear readers!
You are holding Sim No7 in your hands. We think this is our crisis number. A crisis for us, for the time when it comes out. The magazine was supposed to be published in the spring, but now it’s December... And yet you are holding it in your hands, which means we are together and the fairy tale is still here, with us, and everything is still possible.
Our issue opens with the article “Captive, Treasure, Hero and the Anal Stage of Development” translated by Konstantin Slepak, written by the gifted British Jungian analyst Joseph Redfern. The author reflects on the archetype of the hero, shows the connection with the Kleinian concept of “manic defense”, emphasizes both the positive and negative sides of the hero, his connection with Anima. You will see that in the transitional phase of separation from the Mother, the beloved other is the most valuable (and in its negative pole the most disgusting or betraying) possessed/dispossessed.

The next article in the “Psychology” section is a report by Jungian analyst from Israel Henry Abramovich “Why did Odysseus return home in rags?” translated by Natalia Pavlikova, read at the XIII IAP conference “Dreams, imagination and creativity in depth psychology” in the summer of 2015. We took this long-standing report, first, because we all need to touch on the myth of return from time to time. Secondly, Odysseus is always relevant. And thirdly, if we - our publishing house - stay afloat, we will definitely publish the book by Henry Abramovich “Why Odysseus returned home in rags and other mysterious moments in the lives of BUDDHA, SOCRATES, JESUS, ABRAHAM and other great people”, we have one idea.
The “Psychology” section continues with an article by the excellent author Elena Vasilyeva, a Jungian analyst and culturologist from St. Petersburg, “On the Warrior and the Sage.” This is an article about social hierarchy, about a person’s place in the world, about how questions of the meaning of one’s own life become aggravated at moments of transition. And the first section of the magazine ends with the article “The Tree of Life and Death” by an author already familiar to you - Nina Khrebtova, analytical psychologist, doctor. This article was written based on a report given at the XXV IAAP conference “Ancestors and Descendants” in the summer of 2021. In the article, Nina, a long-time friend of our magazine, suggests reflecting on the heritage of our ancestors, what we can inherit and how to use it.
The “Science” section, as it is not surprising, in this issue is about... love and history. You can sit with the historian Alexander Pachkalov over the map and look for where the golden apples were, whether they can be seen in reality and whether it is necessary, because they so often lead to discord. By the way, golden apples are directly related to both the tree of life and the goddess of love Aphrodite. The article by the well-known and beloved author Natalia Budur “Nansen and His Women” continues the story of the hero and the beautiful princess, but not through the prism of psychology, but through the eyes of a historian reflecting on the myth of the great Nansen, his life and love. And the trilogy ends with an interview with historian and Egyptologist Viktor Solkin, “Place God in Your Heart,” in which Viktor answered questions from the editors of “SiM.” This dialogue was also about love - love for the beauty of this world, for the works of art of ancient Egypt, for its temples and history.
We move on to “Art.” The section opens with an article by analytical psychologist Fatima Bagaeva “The Jungian Pipe” - this is a study of the creation of the animated film “The Magic Pipe”, the author of which Lydia Gapuzova sang the hymn of her beloved Ossetia, its epic and strength, while being far away
from her, in such difficult 90s of the last century. The following article was written by the artist Maxim Sukharev. From Ossetian culture we move on to Slavic culture - in the article “Symbolism of color in traditional sculpture. Based on the material of Slavic traditions,” we dive into the meaning of the primary color triad “white-red-black.” The third article, “The Image of Music in Music,” was written by composer Dilyara Gabitova. Dilyara was born in Bashkiria, but her article is not about national culture, but about free music-making, the birth of the image of a musical work.
And the fourth, dearly beloved section “Doing”. Probably, by placing in it an article by Jungian analyst Victoria Andreeva “To a Teddy Friend...Research on a Symbol,” the editors are not entirely right, because the study is. But while reading the article, we were immersed in those times (in fact, this is still happening for some people now) when we could not part with teddy bears, we remembered how we carried them everywhere with us and did so many things with them! We dug through our handbags and hiking backpacks and found a huge amount of plush and all sorts of other transitional objects. So, in our humble opinion, the article is addressed specifically to doing - both ordinary and Great. Continuing the theme of totems and rituals, touched upon by the bear’s best friend, is the article by Alina Alyautdinova “The Wheel of the Year: non-spirits for mantles, magic and life,” a runologist and fortuneteller, who talks about the wheel of the year and the combination of annual transitions and smells, how smells can tell where move forward in the consultation process. Afterwards you can read the short, but very capacious, deep fairy tale “Woman and the Earth” by the magical Lita Lee.
And in conclusion, we would like to introduce you to a new section of the “Doing” section - Dictionary of Symbols. In it we will publish short articles from different dictionaries.
